Adebayo Faleti (26 December 1930 – 23 July 2017) was Africa’s first newscaster, Africa’s first stage play director, Africa’s first film editor and librarian with Africa’s first television station (WNTV/WNBS), Nigeria’s first Yoruba presenter on television and radio alike, as well as a Nigerian poet, journalist, writer, Nollywood film director, and actor. He was also a Yoruba translator, a broadcaster, a television pioneer, and the founder of Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), now known as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
Adebayo Faleti Early Life and Education
Faleti was born in Agbo-Oye, Oyo State, but grew up in Obananko, Kuranga, close to Oyo State. He is the only child of his mother, Durowade Ayinke Faleti, and the first son of his father, Joseph Akanbi Faleti.
Alagba Faleti has always had a passion for drama since he was a child. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds, his parents were unable to fund his education to pursue his dreams, so he decided to postpone his primary education. He then gathered a few interested coworkers and formed his own successful theater group, Oyo Youth Operatic Society (founded in 1949).
Faleti eventually returned to school by taking a job in a primary school, where he worked for six years to earn enough money for his secondary education with the help of his father’s financial support. He graduated from the University of Dakar in Senegal with a Certificate of Proficiency in French Language and Civilization in 1966.

Two years later, he received an honors degree in Lit-in-English from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. In 1971, he received a certificate in television production from the Radio Netherlands Training Center in Hilversum, the Netherlands.

Faleti has written, produced, and acted in a number of well-known Yoruba plays. He is also well-known for his poetry. He was the first schoolteacher at Ife Odan in Osun State, near Ejigbo Town. He was also the General Manager of Oyo State Broadcasting Corporation (BCOS), also known as Radio OYO, Ibadan. He began his career as a film editor and librarian at Western Nigerian Television (WNTV), now known as NTA Ibadan, in 1959.
