Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, OON (born 3 February 1941) is a well-known Nigerian actress, journalist, TV host, and cosmetologist. Lycett is a feminist who founded Africa Woman magazine in the 1970s.

The acclaimed international award-winning actress with over 50 years experience, who turned 81 three months ago on February 3rd, 2022, is getting stronger and full of life as she continues to cook, exercise, and clean the house.

In December 1966, she was in the rehearsal hall of a performance of Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel at the Royal Court Theatre in London when she was requested to participate by William Gaskill, the director of the play.

This Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) was trained as a cosmetologist in the UK at the Christine Shaw School of Beauty Science in London, but because to her natural ability, which Gaskill found, she became a veteran in acting.

Lycett was born on 3 February 1941 in Lagos as the first of a set of twin sisters. She attended Mt Carmel Convent School in Lagos before moving on to Methodist Girls’ High School in Lagos, while her twin sister and elder sister attended Holy Child College.

She went to London to further her education in business and administration. She studied at the Christine Shaw School of Beauty Science in London, where she earned a certificate in cosmetology.

She briefly taught at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Nigeria before moving to the UK to complete her education. She worked as a server in England when she first arrived, cleaning tables and doing dishes. She also worked as a typist for the civil service, eventually rising to the position of secretary to the chairman. She was educated by the civil service.

Growing up was difficult for Taiwo, especially when she had a child at the age of 15. This prompted her parents and family to neglect her, but she registered in evening classes despite the situation at the time since she was determined to get educated. Through her friend David Akinduro, she was able to travel to the United Kingdom in 1959.

The iconic actress has always been a hard worker, having purchased a typewriter for herself while still in school in the United Kingdom. She began teaching herself to type until one day she found an advertisement and applied for it, and she was called upon and hired due to her typing talents. Her employer offered to pay for her education, which she accepted.

Taiwo Ajai made her acting début in Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel, a two-act comedy directed by William Gaskill and performed at London’s Royal Court Theatre in December 1966. Her acting debut was unplanned, yet it proved to be a stepping stone to a fruitful and satisfying career. Because of how impressive her debut was, she had to consider pursuing a career in acting.

She quit her corporate career in 1972 to join the Traverse Theatre Group for the Edinburgh Festival. She went on to have a number of television and theatrical shows. In 1973, she appeared in Amadu Maddy’s play Life Everlasting at the Africa Centre in London, and later that year, she appeared in Peter Nichols’ The National Health at the Festival of British Theatre, and further appearances followed while in the UK.

Mrs. Lycett returned to Nigeria in 1971 with the permission and support of her husband, Tom Lycett, who informed her that her people needed to know and witness what she was doing. Because she is doing such wonderful work in England, England did not require her, but her people did.

Since her return to Nigeria, she has appeared in several notable Nigerian films, including the award-winning Nigerian soap opera, Tinsel, as well as the 2016 action thriller film, Oloibiri, directed by Curtis Graham, produced by Rogers Ofime, and co-starred by the late legendary actor, Olu Jacobs, as well as the ever – young Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD).

Taiwo Lycett established a career in journalism as the founding editor of Africa Woman Magazine, a women’s magazine for Africans in the Diaspora. She took part in the United Nations International Women’s Year as an editor.

On 1 October 2006 she received a national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), decorated by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In February 2008, at an All-Star Gala held at Theatre Royal Stratford East on the 10th anniversary of Tiata Fahodzi, she was honoured as a leader of British-African theatre. She is also a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA).

She was also honored with The Industry Merit Award at the just concluded 2022 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) on the 14th of May 2022 held at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

She became a mother at the age of 15; her parents and family ignored her, but she later enrolled in after classes.

She was able to travel to the United Kingdom in 1959 thanks to her friend David Akinduro, whom she eventually married. However, due to domestic violence, the marriage eventually failed.

After her divorce from Akinduro, she married Thomas Lycett in 1968, and their marriage lasted until her husband’s death in 1993. However, at the age of 65, she was robbed and raped in her home in Egbe in 2006.

Her twin sister passed away 33 years ago.
